What a day for racing fans as the famous Godolphin blue saluted the judge first an impressive five times at Royal Randwick on Saturday. But oh how it could have been a different result but for some quick thinking from Goldner’s driver Maxwell Amidy.
Not long into his trip from Osborne Park with Exosphere and Complacent (who went on to win the Group 2 Roman Consul and Group 3 Craven Plate respectively), Max encountered another truck on fire at the merger of the M7 and M2 and subsequently this route was closed for the afternoon.
As traffic came to a stop Max found himself many lengths back and hard up against the rail with seemingly nowhere to go. Max managed to find a gap and use the shoulder, bus lanes and foot-paths to navigate his conveyance to an alternate route to get the horses to racing HQ safely if somewhat late.
As Operations Manager Jason Garske nervously monitored his progress and the media picked up on the breaking news of his precious cargo’s peril there was talk of both horses being scratched. The vets however found them both to be in good order and they were allowed to go on and complete their destiny and contribute to an historic day.
Traffics fines are likely pending for use of bus lanes but I am sure you will agree a great piece of work from Max, who has already received a number of votes for Goldner’s employee of the year with a performance that was like kicking the winning field goal in extra time of the grand final.
